The Treadle Project

An ongoing project exploring whether treadle-driven sewing conditions can bring a different kind of strength and tension to contemporary denim.
This project brings pre-electric sewing conditions into contemporary garment making.
Rather than simply recreating vintage clothing, it limits the making process itself in order to produce a different texture and tension in the final garment.
Only two machines are used:
Singer 31-15 (1910)
Singer 84-1 (1910)
Both were originally operated in treadle-driven settings, and for this project no motor is used.
All production is carried out only through foot-powered operation.
Under these conditions,
sewing speed, the weight of operation, irregular feed movement, and the way the fabric is held all appear directly in the final result.
As a result,
the stitching does not remain perfectly uniform,
and subtle differences in tension and feed become fixed as part of the garment’s expression.
This is not intentional vintage distressing.
It is sewing in which the traces of the act of making remain in the structure itself.
The model does not reproduce a 19th-century silhouette.
Instead, it is based on the contemporary silhouette most supported within BBM.
In other words,
the shape is contemporary, while the physicality of making remains pre-industrial.
At BBM, earlier-specification waist overalls have also been made using
Singer No.2, Grover & Baker No.1, and hand-sewn buttonholes.
The Treadle Collection is a more practical configuration of that same line of thought.
The 31-15 allows flat-felled seam construction
The 84-1 allows the formation of strong buttonholes
Because of this,
the model still functions as a pair of jeans with sufficient practical strength.
The garment is built only through the operations these two machines can handle.
As a result:
inseam seam allowances remain unfinished
thread finishing is kept to a minimum
stitching remains slightly irregular
no belt loops are added; adjustment is made through suspenders or a cinch back
These are not decorative reproductions,
but design decisions that leave the making conditions themselves inside the garment.
For those who want more contemporary practical specifications, the following are offered as options:
added belt loops
overlock finishing
These are handled on motor-driven vintage machines.
The sales format is not off-the-rack,
but made-to-order through dialogue and fitting.
The Treadle Collection is an experimental bespoke jeans line that fixes the operation, time, and physicality of treadle sewing into a contemporary silhouette.

The Treadle Project
足踏みミシンによる制作条件を通して、現代のデニムに別の強さと緊張感が生まれるかを探るプロジェクトです。
このプロジェクトは、蒸気動力や電動ミシンが縫製現場に完全に普及する以前の制作条件を、現代の衣服制作に持ち込む試みです。
単なるヴィンテージの再現ではなく、制作工程そのものを限定することで、衣服に別の質感と緊張感を生み出すことを目的としています。
使用するミシンは以下の2台のみです。
・Singer 31-15（1910年製）
・Singer 84-1（1910年製）
いずれも本来は足踏み駆動で運用されていた機種であり、今回の制作ではモーターを使用せず、足踏み動力のみで制作を行っています。
この制作方法では、縫製速度、操作の重さ、送りの揺れ、布の保持力といった要素が直接仕上がりに現れます。
その結果として、ステッチは完全な均一性を持たず、テンションの微細な差や送りの揺らぎが、そのまま衣服の表情として定着します。
これは意図的なヴィンテージ加工ではなく、制作操作そのものの痕跡が構造として残る縫製です。
今回のモデルは19世紀のシルエットを再現するものではなく、現在BBMで支持されている現代的なシルエットをベースとしています。
つまり、形は現代、制作の身体性は前工業的という構造で成立しています。
BBMではこれまで、Singer No.2、Grover & Baker No.1、手縫いボタンホールによる、さらに初期的な仕様の waist overalls も制作してきました。
今回の Treadle Collection は、その思想を保ったまま、工程として成立する範囲に整理した仕様です。
・31-15 により折伏せ縫いが可能
・84-1 により強度のあるボタンホール形成が可能
そのため、本モデルは十分な実用強度を持つジーンズとして成立します。
制作は、この2台で成立する工程のみで構成されます。
その結果として、
・内股の縫い代は切りっぱなし
・糸始末は最小限
・ステッチはわずかに不均一
・ベルトループは設けず、サスペンダーまたはシンチバックで調整
という仕様になります。
これは装飾的な再現ではなく、制作条件そのものを衣服に残す設計です。
現代的な実用仕様を希望される場合は、
・ベルトループ追加
・オーバーロック処理
をオプションとして用意します。
これらはモーター駆動のヴィンテージミシンで対応します。
販売形式は吊るしではなく、対話とフィッティングを通じて完成する誂え形式です。
The Treadle Collection は、足踏みミシンによる操作・時間・身体性を、現代シルエットの中に固定化した、実験的ビスポークジーンズのラインです。
