Legend Kiyama Originals Raw Japanese Denim

The Type 201 captures a pivotal moment in denim history—the era when the waist overall evolved through the rising power of industrial machinery. It reflects a time when machines became capable of stitching heavier denims with increased speed and precision, marking a transition toward more robust and efficient construction.

  • Type 201 Authentic High Rise Straight Fit

  • The Fabric: Legend Kiyama 13oz raw denim, woven in Okayama. Blended American cotton is used to achieve the quintessential dry texture of early workwear.

  • The Craft: Hand Made to Order by Takayuki Echigoya in Japan.

  • The Machinery: Sewn exclusively on two vintage instruments: the Singer No.31 and the No.71 buttonhole machine. We honor the "top-stitched seam" (folded and lock-stitched) that defined this era, long before the advent of modern overlocking.

  • Construction & Details:

    • Primitive Integrity: A pure Lock Stitch model with no over-lock stitches inside, remaining faithful to late 19th-century construction methods.

    • 100% cotton thread used in 3 different sizes and 2 distinct colors.

    • Steel buttons designed to rust and age naturally.

    • 5oz natural vegetable-tanned cowhide leather patch.

  • Care & Characteristics:

    • Shrinkage: Approx. 8–12% (vertical) and 3–5% (horizontal) after the first wash.

    • 100% Cotton / Machine washable.

    • Note: Indigo may transfer to lighter surfaces due to its natural characteristics.

About the Limited Edition Legend Kiyama Denim

Kiyama-san has been producing denim all his life in the denim holly land of Okayama, Japan. For over 50 years, he's produced world class denim. For this special project, he's agreed to produce some of the last rolls of loose weave raw denim from the Toyoda G8 machine that is no longer used in most denim production factories, because of it's time consuming nature. The care and attention that it takes to run the machine gives the denim a old-world quality, much like the denim jeans we now revel as vintage, this denim is one of a kind.

Each one of our denim pieces are hand made to order in our small studio in Brooklyn, NY. For the love of vintage denim, I spent over two years collecting vintage Singer machines to both honor and replicate the qualities of denim from the past. Each piece takes up to 8 hours to produce. I do this so that I can produce the best quality jeans for everyone. One by one, I read the orders and cut each pattern as they come, making every pair to their original or bespoke needs.
